The popularity of rideshare services, including Uber, has skyrocketed in recent years. But what happens if you are involved in a car accident while riding in an Uber vehicle? Who would compensate you for your injuries and losses?

So, what to do if your Uber crashes? You may want to consult with an Atlanta car accident attorney to determine your options.

What to Do if I Get in an Uber Accident?

Take the following steps if your Uber has been involved in a car accident:

1. Call 911

If anyone has been hurt in an Uber accident, do not hesitate to call 911. If the injuries are bad enough, you will be transported to a hospital to receive medical care.

2. Report the accident to the police

If you have been involved in an Uber accident in Atlanta, call the police and wait for their arrival. O.C.G.A. § 40-6-273 requires drivers involved in car crashes to report the accident to the police if the collision led to injuries, death, or property damage of at least $500.

3. Collect everyone’s contact and insurance information

Do not hesitate to get the contact and insurance information of all parties involved, including your Uber driver. In many accidents, it is nearly impossible to determine fault immediately after the accident, which is why you should have everyone’s insurance information.

4. Report the accident to Uber

Use the Uber app to report the accident. After your report is made, the rideshare company will report the collision to their insurance company. You may receive a call from Uber to make sure that everyone is OK.

5. Speak with an attorney

It is advisable to consult with an experienced Uber accident attorney to ensure that you are compensated for all of your damages and losses if your Uber crashes. Your attorney will help you navigate the legal process.

Will Uber’s Insurance Cover My Injuries and Damages?

If you are not the one driving a vehicle involved in an Uber accident, your auto insurance policy may not apply to cover your damages. Thus, if you have been involved in an Uber accident, you might wonder, “Will Uber’s insurance cover my injuries and losses?”

Uber provides both liability insurance and uninsured motorist coverage for its drivers and passengers. Here’s how Uber’s insurance works in the event of an accident:

  1. If the Uber driver is in an accident while the app is turned on, but he/she does not have passengers in the vehicle, Uber’s liability insurance will cover $50,000 for injuries per person / $100,000 for injuries per accident / $25,000 for property damage.
  2. If the Uber driver is in an accident after accepting your ride or while having a passenger in the vehicle, Uber provides $1 million in liability insurance and uninsured motorist coverage.

Uber’s $1 million liability insurance is applicable when your Uber driver is at fault. Uninsured motorist (UM) coverage is applicable if another driver is at fault but does not have any insurance or has insufficient insurance to pay for the resulting damages.
